Dance Education & Movement Initiative (DEMI)

At Victoria Ballet Theatre, we believe dance has the power to transform lives. Since 1984, when VBT first brought full-length ballet to the community with Swan Lake in Riverside Park, the company has worked to make exceptional dance accessible to audiences throughout Victoria and the surrounding region.

Today, VBT presents an annual production of The Nutcracker, as well as spring and fall performances featuring full-length classical ballets, newly commissioned classical and contemporary works, and choreography by local, national, and international guest artists. VBT is also committed to nurturing the next generation of artists by developing and producing work by emerging young choreographers within our own community.

Our Purpose

Since 2001, Victoria Ballet Theatre’s outreach program, the Dance Education and Movement Initiative — DEMI — has provided equitable access to dance instruction and live dance performances for youth in Victoria County and surrounding areas.

Through partnerships with Victoria Independent School District, the Boys & Girls Club of Victoria, and Ballet Academy of South Texas, DEMI removes financial and logistical barriers that often prevent children from experiencing the arts. The program provides free dance classes, performance opportunities, scholarships, transportation support, dancewear, costumes, and free or reduced-cost admission to live dance performances.

DEMI creates access through three primary pathways: direct instruction, scholarships, and live performance.

Direct Instruction

Victoria Ballet Theatre partners with the Boys & Girls Club of Victoria to provide free dance classes for students who sign up to participate. During the school year, weekly classes may be held on-site at the Boys & Girls Club or, when scheduling and funding allow, students are transported to Ballet Academy of South Texas for weekly ballet and tap dance instruction led by trained artistic staff.

In addition to technique classes, students learn choreography to be performed in Ballet Academy of South Texas’ annual student concert and at various events throughout the year. Victoria Ballet Theatre provides teacher salaries, dance shoes, dancewear, performance costumes, and show tickets for participating families. Students from the Boys & Girls Club are also provided transportation to all Victoria Ballet Theatre performances at no cost.

Since 2017, participation in this program has grown from 10 students to 20 students in spring 2026, reflecting a clear and growing demand for dance education in our community.

Scholarships

As VBT’s partner school, Ballet Academy of South Texas works with Victoria Ballet Theatre to provide scholarship opportunities for students who demonstrate talent, commitment, and a desire to pursue more extensive dance training.

Students identified through DEMI programs may be invited to continue their studies in a formal studio setting. Victoria Ballet Theatre provides registration fees, dancewear, and performance costumes, while Ballet Academy of South Texas sponsors full tuition. Students selected for this program train year-round at no cost to their families.

For students who later audition and are accepted into Victoria Ballet Theatre’s company of dancers, DEMI funding may also help support company-related expenses such as membership fees, supplies, and travel.

Live Performance

Since 1984, Victoria Ballet Theatre has provided live dance performances for area school-age children at discounted prices. Today, VBT presents daytime educational matinees for every production in its season, serving students from Victoria and surrounding communities.

Teachers and families attending these matinees receive supplemental educational materials designed to help students not only enjoy what may be their first live theater experience, but also connect that experience to classroom learning.

In the 2025-2026 Season, thanks to the generosity of our donors, VBT provided all VISD students with free admission to every educational matinee. In spring 2026, every student attending VBT’s production of Seuss & Stravinsky received a free Dr. Seuss book to take home as an extension of the performance experience.

How DEMI Makes a Difference

Victoria Ballet Theatre is committed to expanding outreach in service of the Victoria community. Current state data show that 70.2% of VISD students are economically disadvantaged, underscoring the importance of programs that remove barriers to arts access. (Texas Schools)

Research continues to show that arts education is closely connected to student success. The Texas Cultural Trust’s 2025 State of the Arts Report found that Texas students highly engaged in the arts are up to 46% more likely to pass Texas Success Initiative criteria, twice as likely to meet AP/IB exam criteria, and 20% more likely to earn college dual credit achievements. (Texas Cultural Trust) Brookings’ study of Houston’s Arts Access Initiative found that expanded arts experiences improved students’ academic, social, and emotional outcomes, including writing achievement, compassion for others, and reduced disciplinary infractions. (Brookings)

Dance education offers something especially powerful: it helps students build discipline, creativity, confidence, collaboration, and a sense of belonging. The Arts Education Partnership notes that dance education supports students’ personal and academic growth and builds lasting connections to culture and community. (Arts Education Partnership) The National Dance Education Organization also identifies dance as a pathway for developing physical, emotional, and social well-being, including social-emotional skills such as self-management, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. “These findings provide strong evidence that arts educational experiences can produce significant positive impacts on academic and social development.” — Brookings Institution (Brookings)

Through DEMI, Victoria Ballet Theatre turns this research into lived experience: a first dance class, a first performance, a first costume, a first time on stage, and for many students, a first sense that the arts belong to them.
